the 5 craziest ways lottery winners spent their fortune

The 5 Craziest Ways Lottery Winners Spent Their Fortune

We’ve put together a list of the 5 craziest ways lottery winners have spent their fortune. There are plenty of cliches about how lottery winners spend their money. Gigantic houses, flashy cars and round-the-world trips come to mind! However, not everyone who wins big has such plain tastes. It turns out that the spending patterns of many big jackpot winners were, shall we say… a little unusual. Let’s go!

Craziest winner 1: Jonathan Vargas created his own wrestling TV show

Winning the lottery jackpot

Jonathan Vargas was only 19 when his numbers came up in the US Powerball. His winnings totalled a staggering $35.3 million, and his initial plans for the money were surprisingly modest: invest most of it, buy a new house and generally just secure his future.

Jonathan ended up taking a different path. Combining his twin passions in life, wrestling and scantily-clad women, he created his own television show, “Wrestlicious Takedown”. The show was a strange mixture of all-female wrestling and comedy sketches.

With Vargas himself frequently making appearances under his rapper alias “JV Rich”. Far from being a wild success, the TV network decided to cancel Wrestlicious after one series. We must commend Jonathan, though – no one can say he didn’t follow his dreams!

Craziest winner 2: Tom Crist gave all of it away to charity

Tom Baker Lottery Winnings

Gifts and large philanthropic donations rank highly on statistics about how people spend their lottery winnings. However, it’s extremely rare to see someone opt to give ALL of their winnings away to charity. Yet this is exactly what Canadian Tom Crist did, who won $40 million on the Lotto Max draw in 2013.

I just retired at the end of September, so I was fortunate enough in my career to set myself up and my kids anyway, and there was no doubt in my mind where that money was going to go, it was going to go to charity.” – Tom Christ.

Craziest winner 3: Gloria Mackenzie fixed her childhood school’s roof

Lottery winners giving to charity

84-year-old Gloria MacKenzie won a jaw-dropping $590.5 million in the US Powerball. She chose to take the lump-sum payout of $278 million. She then wasted no time upgrading the small trailer she lived in to a 6000-odd foot luxury home.

Her next step was a little less conventional. Gloria made a $2m donation to Schenck High School, her local high school, which she attended as a child, and that her daughter was teaching at. She set the money aside to repair the school’s roof. It seems plenty of people are willing to give generously to others with no expectation of anything in return!

Craziest winner 4: Michael Carroll blew it all in spectacular fashion

Michael Carrol winning the lottery jackpot

Carroll, who goes by the nickname the “King of Chavs”, was only 19 when he won £9.7 million on the National Lottery in 2002. He did not even have a bank account set up at the time of his lottery win. In the 10 years that followed, Carroll managed to spend all of his winnings on lavish new purchases.

His national reputation as a “Lotto Lout” was stoked by the numerous occasions he ran into trouble with the law, receiving an ASBO and serving jail time in the years following his win. In 2010 he applied for his old job as a binman but didn’t get it.

He spoke about his current job at a biscuit factory: “I get £204 every week for packing and stacking shortbread and cookies, and I love it. I treasure those wages more than any £9 million fortune.” This cautionary tale shows that, for some, a massive lottery win can be more of a curse than a blessing!

Craziest winner 5: John Kutey build a water park

Winning the lottery with a lottery syndicate

John Kutey won a $28.7 million share of $319 million as part of a syndicate with work colleagues. Intending to give something back to his home city, he went to the village hall with his wife to work out how best to do just that. That’s how Kutey ended up donating $200,000 towards constructing a “Spray park” in Green Island, New York.

Landmarks That Wouldn’t Exist Without The Lottery

Landmarks That Wouldn’t Exist Without The Lottery

Did you know that the lottery does more than make people rich? It helps charity projects to grow from an idea to reality. It also has created some very well-known landmarks that would not be here today without the lottery

Find out which global landmarks have benefited from the worldwide lottery below. Some may surprise you!

The Lottery and The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is one of the biggest monuments in the modern world. Surprisingly, over four million tourists arrive there each year, making it one of the top 50 tourist destinations on the planet. It isn’t easy to assume that the monument wouldn’t be here without lottery cash.

How The Lottery helped build the statue of Liberty

The endeavour to construct the enormous statue was exceedingly costly and hampered by logistical issues. The Statue of Liberty was built in two stages: the statue itself in France, then the foundations in America. The French began fundraising in 1875, but by 1880, the planned cost of the plan had more than doubled, reaching one million francs! Fearing they as a country that couldn’t keep its commitments, the French urgently launched new fundraising drives, including presenting the statue’s head at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.

Developing a National Lottery salvaged the project and allowed it to travel to the United States. The French lottery offered expensive paintings and other fine art pieces as rewards. The cost of constructing the base equals that of the stunning landmark itself.

London’s Millennium Bridge

How The Lottery helped build London’s millennium bridge

The iconic Millennium Bridge in London was built with a spectacular steel art design to commemorate the year 2000. The Heritage Lottery Fund, part of the National Lottery, provided funding for the project. Unfortunately, the bridge became infamous when it opened because it kept bouncing about, earning it the moniker “Wobbly Bridge” for a while. Thankfully, it was re-engineered to ensure structural stability and is now a modern-era London monument worth a visit.

The Lottery and the Colosseum of Rome

The Colosseum is a spectacular landmark that has remained one of the New Seven Wonders of the World because of this financing. Indeed, Augustus, the Roman Emperor, is known to have instituted a lottery to acquire money from the “plebeians” following costly civil wars: money that was documented in building new roads and the Colosseum.

How The Lottery helped to build the Colosseum

With an estimated 18 million euro financial injection, Italy’s ailing economy sent taxes and lottery revenue back towards the Colosseum to save the ancient structure from crumbling.

Landmarks of Colonial America

Much of New World America was created using lottery money. The Jamestown Colony, the first English colony in the Americas, was funded by one set by King James I. A Grand National Lottery was used to renew most of Washington, D.C., in 1823. However, there was one minor setback: when the winner went to claim the $100.000 jackpot, the organisers fled with the money, forcing the Federal Government to pay the reward.

How The Lottery helped to build American landmarks

Thanks to lottery financing, thousands of modern and historical sites throughout the world exist today. When you play games like the Lotto, you may not only be in with a chance of becoming a millionaire, but you may also be helping long-term historical initiatives.

There you have it. Thanks to past and present players, you are all helping to create a legacy for generations to come. So next time you have a losing ticket, try not to be too downhearted. Instead, think of the great causes you are helping!

Seven things to buy if you win the EuroMillions

7 Things you’d buy if you won the EuroMillions

The EuroMillions is a game that will make you incredibly wealthy, and you can play for the chance to live the life usually reserved for the rich and famous. We’ve included the top things that you should definitely do if you win the EuroMillions.

1) Keep Quiet when you win the EuroMillions

When you win the EuroMillions keep things top secret

We know this isn’t something you can buy, but we need to throw it in here! Don’t shout it from the rooftops, and don’t even post it on Facebook.

This may be the most challenging thing you could do, but believe us when we say that money will bring out the quirky and unique, as well as every penny-pincher who thinks they’ve done you a favour and all the long-lost family members who feel entitled. Tell only your partner, your accountant, and your financial adviser.

Remember, this is just our advice. Ultimately what you choose to do is up to you!

2) Set Money Aside for Retirement when you win the EuroMillions

When you win the EuroMillions plan for retirement

If you recently won the EuroMillions, your retirement may begin today. Nonetheless, it is critical that you save money for your retirement years. The younger you are, the more savings you will need. From this vantage point, spending your lottery winnings should be viewed as a marathon rather than a sprint.

Work with your financial advisor to determine how much money you should save for retirement. The amount will be determined partly by the lifestyle you choose to maintain. Other considerations include medical expenses, the number of family members you support, and inflation. They will also assist you in determining the appropriate place for your retirement funds, such as an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), mutual fund, or other investment vehicles.

3) Select Low-Risk Investments with your EuroMillions Winnings

When you win the EuroMillions invest your winnings

After you’ve paid off your debts and saved for retirement, it’s time to relax. This is the time when you can have some fun. You deserve to purchase your ideal home or go on your dream trip.

Your financial adviser can assist you in developing an appropriate budget for “fun.”

4) Make a Difference in the Community with your EuroMillions winnings

When you win the EuroMillions donate to charity

Financial independence also implies the ability to pay it forward. Many lottery winners have donated to charities and other non-profit organisations. Donate to a cause you care about, such as your local church, a compassionate animal shelter, or another organisation, to have a good social influence.

Philanthropy has its own set of advantages. Aside from the positive emotions, charity donating has tax advantages. According to SmartAsset, you can qualify by gifting up to $15,000 (£13,123.71) per individual recipient for a lifetime total of $11.58 million (£10.2 million).

5) A Second Home

When you win the EuroMillions buy a second home

After you’ve had some rest, relaxation, and maybe a tan, it’s time to start looking for your own home away from home. What tickles your fancy? You can do it if you want to be a fly fisherman, an amateur equestrienne, or a winery.

Whatever desires you have in your wildest dreams, now is the moment to make them come true. And who says you have to limit yourself to just one vacation home? You could buy a pied-à-terre in every city on the planet.

6) Create a Scholarship in Your Honour

When you win the EuroMillions create a scholarship in your name

With luck like yours, it’s excellent to give back to the world. Why not establish a scholarship in your honour at your previous institution or university?

You will be able to impact the lives of many students this way. Create your own charity to support the causes that are important to you.

7) A Private Chef

When you win the EuroMillions hire a private chef

Your days of labouring in the kitchen are over. Instead, hire a personal chef to prepare all of your meals. All you have to do is ask for Italian, a Sunday roast, or a super-healthy green juice. And the best thing is you won’t even have to clean up afterwards.

Now that we have helped identify some of the many things to buy, all we can do now is wish you the best for the EuroMillions!

If you didn’t know already, we offer a membership with 10 EuroMillions lines every week, which means you never miss a jackpot! We also place you in a syndicate of up to 49 players, increasing your chances of winning. Good luck!

The Biggest Jackpots Ever!

Lotteries around the world have hit all-time highs, the EuroMillions, Lotto, Powerball & the MegaMillions, but which one claimed the throne for biggest jackpot in world lottery history?! Right here you’ll find out how high these jackpots climbed, and how there could potentially be an unclaimed billionaire (more on that later).

4 – Lotto: €66 Million, May 2016

For the Lotto, the biggest jackpot ever won was on Saturday 9th January 2016, where two UK ticket holders shared a massive €66M. The jackpot had 15 successive rollovers from Saturday 14th November 2015, before being scooped by David & Carol Martin from Hawick, Scotland and an anonymous player who had bought their ticket in Worcester – Both sharing €33M each.

For this win, the jackpot cap for the Lotto was set at €50M, with the jackpot cap being revised to €22M later in 2016. It’s quite unlikely that this kind of jackpot would never be able to be won again for the Lotto – Even luckier for the winner then eh?

3 – EuroMillions: €190 Million, August 2012

Suffolk, England was where the Bayford family scooped a €190M jackpot on Friday 10th August 2012. This is one of the joint biggest jackpots ever to be won in EuroMillions history. The winners claimed a jackpot that rolled-over, 14 times, after eventually reaching the jackpot cap.

The winners of this jackpot splashed the cash on luxury cars, helicopter flights & mansions! Living the life of luxury, that’s for sure.

Who won the other one? An anonymous player in Portugal claimed a similar €190M jackpot on Friday 24th October 2014. With the Superdraw held three weeks earlier, this jackpot eventually reached the jackpot cap after rolling 5 times.

2 – Powerball: $1.58 Billion, January 2016

Won on January 13th, 2016, winning tickets were claimed in California, Florida and Tennessee, with each ticket worth at least $528.8 million.

The California winners opted to stay anonymous and did not wish to become public figures, with the wish of designating most of their winnings to charity.

They said: “We are thankful and blessed for the rare gift that has been placed in our care. We have engaged a team of advisors to educate and guide us through this process so that we can be good stewards of these new resources.”

1 – The biggest in world lottery, MegaMillions: $1.59 Billion, October 2018

The biggest world lottery jackpot of all time is yet to be claimed! Yep, you read that right! The MegaMillions reached an all-time high of $1.59 Billion in October 2018! The winning ticket was purchased in South Carolina, matching all 6 numbers on Tuesday night.

But! And this is a big but, the winner has yet to claim this colossal jackpot! Time is certainly running out for this winner to step forward, with the deadline being on April 2019.

The $1.59 billion jackpot would be paid over 30 years, or alternatively an upfront sum of $878 million. This would mean that the state will lose out on $61 million in income taxes, usually paid by the winner.

There you have it, the highest jackpots in world lottery, with an unannounced billionaire yet to step forward!

1 in 5 jackpots are won by lottery syndicates! So the next time these lotteries hit all-time highs, be sure to join our ready-made syndicates to ensure you are always in the draw, and increase your chances to win such huge jackpots, right here at Lotto Social.

How to earn £30 from Arcade Adventures?

This Christmas isn’t just about reconnecting with friends and families. What better way to play old video games of your childhood and earn cash at the same time? Read through to the end to get some tips and a free play!   If you don’t know about Arcade Adventures yet, read another blog to check it out.    You have to reach 50 stars in the game to get £30 – which means you have to get the maximum 3 stars for 17 levels out of 20 levels. Stars will be awarded based on your speed of completion vs other players. The faster you complete the levels, the more the stars!

Pac-Mouse

Do not eat the big block of cheese until you round up lots of cats behind you
Let the cats chase behind you with a safe distance, and eat the cheese when you really need to. Eating the cats earn you extra points.
Insist on eating the dots will slow you down.
You move slower when you’re eating the dots than when you’re moving through a clear alley. If one of the cats is hot on your tail, do not insist on eating more dots. Continuing to eat cheese is a surefire way to slow Pac-Mouse down and get caught by a cat.

Cube Crunch

Look at the next piece while setting the current piece down
Look at the preview box on the top of your screen while you are lining up with the slots. This will help you plan your next move and make it easier to determine how you want to play.
Clear more lines at one time will gain more points
Build up a mound that is at least 4 rows tall while leaving a single column completely open for the “I” piece. So you can clear 4 rows at a time to score the most points!

Planet Pinball

Do not flip both flippers at the same time
Moving them independently actually makes it easier to hit the ball and less likely to drain the ball in-between them.
Hold flipper up to catch the ball
If the ball is moving slowly around the flippers, you can hold one up to catch the ball. So you can take a little break and reorganize your strategy while you hold the ball in the flipper.

Master Pong

Keep the ball at the corner
Having edge control as those are the places the ball is most likely to go to after rebounding. And you don’t have to move as much due to having a “bigger” area of the platform to bounce the ball off.
Let the ball strike to the side of the paddle
If the ball strikes to the left or right side of the paddle, it should bounce to some other directions instead of going straight back to the opponent’s side. So the opponent will lose the game easily.        Hopefully, the tips above helped you blow the dust off some old cartridge memories.   Got all the tips?
